MUSINGS OF A FATSHIONISTA!

When I was reading the blog on clothing website, Evans,  recently I came across the guest blogger Christina from the fabulous blog Musings of a Fatshionista. Her writing is funny yet informative and she regularly uploads photographs of herself looking fabulous, taking trends and turning them on their head perfected for the girl with more curves than the models walking the runway. She has excellent advice on styling for the fuller figure, like how she took her American Apparell circle scarf and turned it into a maxi skirt with buckled shoes and a rucksack. She looks fabulous and is definatley one of my new style inspirations….lets see how long it takes for the fashion world to catch on. Not long, hopefully!

PLUS SIZE MODELS DONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO CONSUMERS

A recent study by Arizona State University, the University of Cologne in Germany and Erasmus University in the Netherlands shows that using plus-size models in advertising doesn’t make a difference to consumers, ASU News reports.

“We found that overweight consumers demonstrated lower self-esteem – and therefore probably less enthusiasm about buying products – after exposure to any size models in ads (versus ads with no models). Also, normal-weight consumers experienced lower self-esteem after exposure to moderately heavy models, such as those in Dove soap’s ‘Real Women’ campaign, than after exposure to moderately thin models,” said Professor Naomi Mandel.

Mandel showed ads featuring a wide range of model sizes to females with a wide range of BMIs. The women with low BMIs experienced a self-esteem boost after seeing any model, while higher-BMI women experienced a self-esteem drop after seeing any model.

But the normal-BMI women were back-and-forth:

If they viewed a moderately thin model, they felt similar and good; if they saw a moderately heavy model, they worried they were similar and overweight.
And this, researchers found, impacts their willingness to buy the product in question.

OSCAR FEVER

For Gabourey Sidibe her first Oscars are all about a paior of real characters – Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. The “Precious” actress and Best Actress nominee revealed she is most looking forward to meeting and seeing the hosts for the 82nd Academy Awards.

“I was really excited that show would be hosted by Jack Donaghy and the Jerk,” the actress said referring to the duo’s most famous roles. We couldn’t agree with her more.

Steve Martin especially is near to Sidibe’s heart. “My Mom has a crush on Steve Martin,” she gushed. “We used to watch ‘The Jerk’ pretty much every day.”

Standing between the two massive Oscars at the press podium of the nominee luncheon on Monday, Sidibe said it was all starting to feel real. Indeed the luncheon is one of the true signs that the Oscars are right around the corner. “It feels like we’re finally here,” she said.

Sidibe is seen here in a gorgeous pink satin dress and black bolero.

KARL STYLES FOR V MAGAZINE

After the uproar that Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld, created after his comments on plus sized bodies it was surprising to see his input of styling credits for V magazine’s body issue.

The issue itself showed plus sized figures in their true beauty with spread such as Crystal Renn working the exact same looks as a smaller, thinner model. She looked fab! In one spread a naked Candice Huffine lays across the page, showing us that curves are definitely in fashion this season.

Lagerfeld’s shoot, CoCo a Go Go, sees a Chanel inspired almost, over the top lingerie spread with corsages and pearls galore. The shots look fantastic and I hope that the designer can see how beautiful bigger models are and how fabulous the clothes can look.

EVANS NEW SPRING COLLECTION

Evans have certainly pulled a fantastic line up for its spring collection.

The latest 2010 campaign for the company — which caters to sizes 14 to 32 — takes its inspiration from Peter Lindbergh’s 1990 cover for Vogue, featuring a supermodel jackpot of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz.

Twenty years on, Evans’ updated version stars a cluster of curvy beauties — Britney Vecchio, Hayley Morley (of Mark Fast catwalk fame), Crystal Renn (the face of the brand), Amber Tolliver and Peeky — in a clean, simple shot that the brand calls “aspirational yet accessible.”

“These supermodels of the ‘plus’ industry are making you forget their size,” Gary Dakin, vice-president of Ford Models, said in a press release.

“It is women like these that are going to knock down the final barriers, showing that they are some of the best at what they do by modeling for some of the key opinion formers and brands within the fashion world.”

Hear hear. I love the simple, sophisticated aesthetic, with the girls looking gorgeous in jeans, white tees and on-trend fitted tuxedo, military and leather jackets.

FFF WEEK TO COMMENCE

FFF if your wondering stands for Full Figured Fashion week, with the dates finalised for the American plus sized catwalk shows commencing on June 16th 2010 in New York City.

Its great that finally plus size designers are finally getting recognised for their creations and a bigger woman is celebrated as well as all the regular fashion weeks that are soon to hit the world.

Being a healthy plus sized person is something that Britain is slowly coming to accept, unlike America where it is celebrated! Come on Blightly, lets catch up and have our own Full Figured Fashion Week, you know we could rock the catwalk as well as the best of them.

Heres a comment taken from Ashley Stewart, the presenter of last years show…

“In America alone, there are 40 million women over size 14, spending $25 billion a year on clothing, or a quarter of all clothing sales, according to American Demographics. So, why isn’t there a Fashion Week event dedicated to showcasing fashions available to the curvy consumer?

There wasn’t…until NOW!

A partnership of independent fashion designers, retailers, event producers, models and plus industry businesses, Full Figured Fashion Week (FFFWeek) was created to increase economic development in the area of plus size fashion design, clothing merchandising and plus modeling. Our goal is to highlight the very best in plus size fashions – both retail and independent designers, while providing an inaugural showcase of talented designers, models, stylists and plus industry businesses that serve the plus size consumer.

It is estimated that this long overdue and highly anticipated three-day fashion extravaganza (June 25-27, 2009) will debut before an audience of over 1500+ plus size fashion enthusiasts, style mavens, models, boutiques, vendors and the media.”
