MARK FAST TRIUMPHS AGAIN…

Ever wondered what models might look like if they actually ate? Fashion lovers got a glimpse at an alternative universe yesterday, as Canadian designer Mark Fast sent ‘plus size’ models down the runway at London Fashion Week.

While noticeably larger than the average catwalk model, the women were by no means overweight. Instead the models were a size 14 or 16, a healthy dress for their above average height.

The knitwear designer likes to use a mix of different sized models in his shows, to prove that the clinging designs look good on every bodyshape. These include size 16 Crystal Renn, who walked out in a bright red dress yesterday. But not everyone welcomes Fast breaking the mould.

Last year Fast’s stylist and creative director walked out three days before his show, apparently in protest at being asked to work with the ‘plus size’ models. But this year the show went without a hitch. London modelling agency 12+ UK supplied the models.

Founder Sarah Watkinson said 29-year-old Fast was dedicated to using real-looking women. But she added that no other Fashion Week designers had sought models from her agency.

KARL STYLES FOR V MAGAZINE

After the uproar that Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld, created after his comments on plus sized bodies it was surprising to see his input of styling credits for V magazine’s body issue.

The issue itself showed plus sized figures in their true beauty with spread such as Crystal Renn working the exact same looks as a smaller, thinner model. She looked fab! In one spread a naked Candice Huffine lays across the page, showing us that curves are definitely in fashion this season.

Lagerfeld’s shoot, CoCo a Go Go, sees a Chanel inspired almost, over the top lingerie spread with corsages and pearls galore. The shots look fantastic and I hope that the designer can see how beautiful bigger models are and how fabulous the clothes can look.

EVANS NEW SPRING COLLECTION

Evans have certainly pulled a fantastic line up for its spring collection.

The latest 2010 campaign for the company — which caters to sizes 14 to 32 — takes its inspiration from Peter Lindbergh’s 1990 cover for Vogue, featuring a supermodel jackpot of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz.

Twenty years on, Evans’ updated version stars a cluster of curvy beauties — Britney Vecchio, Hayley Morley (of Mark Fast catwalk fame), Crystal Renn (the face of the brand), Amber Tolliver and Peeky — in a clean, simple shot that the brand calls “aspirational yet accessible.”

“These supermodels of the ‘plus’ industry are making you forget their size,” Gary Dakin, vice-president of Ford Models, said in a press release.

“It is women like these that are going to knock down the final barriers, showing that they are some of the best at what they do by modeling for some of the key opinion formers and brands within the fashion world.”

Hear hear. I love the simple, sophisticated aesthetic, with the girls looking gorgeous in jeans, white tees and on-trend fitted tuxedo, military and leather jackets.

GLAMOUR MAG – INFAMOUS NOVEMBER ISSUE

miller2

Glamour magazine is set to honour plus size models in its November Issue after the media attention that their September Issue brought when they photographed Lizzie Miller without airburshing her ‘normal’ (hate using that term) womans stomach.

It caused uproar in the fashion crowd, although the readers of Glamour applauded the magazines decision to print this. Miller is no bigger than a size 12 yet the distorted world of fashion, she was deemed plus size and should have been air brushed to obscurity like most other non- discript models.

The double page spread features Miller, Crystal Renn, Amy Lemons, Ashley Graham, Kate Dillon, Anansa Sims, and Jennie Runk and focuses on excellent, up lifting advice such as we should stop nitpicking about minor flaws and feel comfortable in our bodies. Something us at Glamourplus already knew.

INTERVIEW WITH CRYSTAL RENN

The ‘face’ of Evans has gone against the trend of super size zero models and has carved out a career from her size 16 figure. Crystal was once a tiny 7 stone when agents pressured her to loose even more from her already miniscule frame.

Her curves have led her to sashaying down the catwalk for Jean Paul Gaultier and D&G.

From this Celebs on Sunday magazine, Crystal talks about her rise to fame and those famous curves…

I think the fashion industry focuses too much attention on extremes…Models are either tiny or they’re plus sized, but what about all the people in the middle? Even celebrities are skinny or fat. I think models should be all shapes, heights and colours, that way all women would be able to relate to them.

Curves emphasise your femininity…Men prefer something to grab hold to. Curves make you think of health and vitality, and I think that’s really attractive. Size 0 doesn’t scream health!

Clothes can transform your mood…I love sequins, they always make me feel happy. I’ve got a chequered sequined top and it makes everything I wear with it look great.

I stay in shape by eating healthy…I love organic food and I think its important to listen to your body. If you’re craving something, it’s usually because your body needs it. I love eggs, they have always given me loads of energy. If I’ve been on a long flight and I have to go straight to work, I have some eggs and suddenly I’m in a good mood.

If someone was thinking about becoming a model…I would tell them to be themselves. Don’t look in magazines and think you have to look like all the other girls because that’s what I did. If your true to yourself that’s what will set you apart from the rest. The most important thing about modelling is individuality.”
